Deondre Francois Out For The Year: 3 Things That Matter
Florida State starting quarterback Deondre Francois is out for the year. Now what?
1. Deondre Francois out for the year
You’ve heard of the Next Man Up mantra? For Florida State, it’s going to take Entire Team Up to overcome the loss of starting QB Deondre Francois.
This was supposed to be a huge season for the FSU sophomore. Some put him in the Heisman discussion, many were waiting to see what he could do in an ACC full of talented quarterbacks, and at the very least, he was supposed to be the ultra-tough leader and star of one of the nation’s top teams.
But in the fourth quarter of the loss to Alabama, Francois was tackled awkwardly, started writhing in pain, and was carted off the field in a leg brace.
On Sunday, it was announced that he suffered an injury to his patella tendon and is out for the year. Scheduled to have surgery this week, the only positive is that it came so early in the season that he should be ready in time for next year. But now …
2. Florida State, get ready for James Blackman
And now, the Florida State season is up to a freshman.
J.J. Cosentino was originally expected to be the main backup – bringing a little bit of experience and time logged in the system – but Blackman turned into the No. 2 guy this offseason. H
Who is he? He’s a rail-thin 6-5, 185-pound decent recruit – but not an elite one – with a nice passing arm and good mechanics. While he’s not going to take off and run, he can move just enough to get by. However, he’s not built to take any sort of a pounding.
One of the keys to Francois was his ability to always keep on going after getting beaten, battered and bruised. Blackman looks like he might be snapped in two.
And now he’s the starting quarterback. Fortunately, he gets ULM next week – not Alabama.
3. Okay, now what?
It was a tough 24-7 loss to Alabama, but the defense had a good night and the loss wasn’t so miserable that it’ll ruin the Florida State season. Even if it loses another game, as long as it wins the ACC championship, it should be deep in the hunt for the College Football Playoff.
However, the team has to get its groove back against ULM, because Miami and NC State follow, and they can turn the lights out on the season in a hurry.
Blackman doesn’t have to carry the offense, but he has to prove right away that he can drive his deep passes and take the heat off of fellow freshman RB Cam Akers and the ground game. For that to happen, the shaky offensive line has to be brilliant from here on.
