BYU’s Disastrous Season: Utah State 40, BYU 24
After a total clunker against Utah State, BYU’s bad season just got a whole lot worse.
Utah State 40, BYU 24
Prediction: BYU 24, Utah State 20
Line: BYU -1.5 o/u: 48
BYU was able too outgain Utah State 396 yards to 288 – the defense did its part, especially against the Aggie zone-read running attack – but the Cougars were a hot mess.
And now, so is their season.
With four interceptions and three fumbles, BYU screwed up drive after drive in the ugly loss, and now, the program has yet to beat an FBS team this season.
A great linebacking corps is being wasted, and a whole lot of potential went pffffffffffft thanks to an offense that was embarrassing against LSU, lousy against Utah, horrible against Wisconsin, and now, a total liability against Utah State.
Not having QB Tanner Mangum around is a problem, but that’s still no excuse for all the problems and all the mistakes. Worse yet, there doesn’t appear to be any hope to turn this thing around.
What has BYU been able to show to think it can beat Boise State? How about Mississippi State? The Cougars could and should be 1-6 to start the season.
Fortunately, that’s when the schedule pivots
at East Carolina, San Jose State, at Fresno State, at UNLV, and UMass are next. None of those five will go bowling, and neither will BYU if it doesn’t win all five and then take down Hawaii in the finale.
But is that really what BYU football is supposed to be about? Just get to a bowl game?
The program of Edwards, and Young, and McMahon, and Detmer – the older one – and Bosco, and all the historic offenses can’t score, can’t hold on to the ball.
And can’t beat Utah or Utah State.
