Boise State tried to out Texas A&M, Texas A&M with a total collapse against Washington State – doing everything possible to give the game away, until it finally did.

That was bad, but New Mexico losing to New Mexico State – again – might have been worse, and some current allegations being hurled at head coach Bob Davie could turn into an even bigger issue.

The Lobos can’t seem to find their old swagger as they try throwing it around a little bit more, and now they have to deal with an angry Bronco team in need of a big home win to make an early Mountain West statement.

One Reason Why Boise State Will Win

The run defense has been a killer.

Don’t just blow off the stats because the Broncos faced Washington State – the Cougars are trying to run the ball a bit. The Boise State defensive front has allowed just 98 rushing yards so far, with nine sacks and six takeaways.

The D might have melted down late against Wazzu, but the offense had a lot to do with that.

New Mexico is strangely sputtering and coughing offensively, but …

One Reason Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos are playing a little defense of their own, allowing just 107 rushing yards in the first two games. Granted, that’s partly because NMSU’s Tyler Rogers spent most of the game taking target practice, but the defensive front really is solid.

With Boise State star QB Brett Rypien struggling through a concussion, if he can’t go and be his same, accurate self, it’ll be up to Kansas transfer Montell Cozart to take over. While he can run, he can also make the really, really bad plays at times.

The Lobos have to be ready to take advantage of every opportunity.

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico’s offense will continue to have problems getting going. Boise State’s defense will control the game from the start, but the offense will still have problems, too.

The Broncos will win, but they’re not going to look anything like the team that should be deep in the hunt for the Mountain West title, and maybe a New Year’s Six bowl game.
