Really? Is Baylor that bad?
Fortunately for new Bear head coach Matt Rhule, Josh Rosen happened to Texas A&M, and Tom Herman hasn’t won a national title yet at Texas – losing to Liberty in the opener sort of got shoved aside in all the Week One hoopla.
UTSA will get its shot to start out strong after having an extra week to prepare. The opener against Houston was cancelled due to Harvey, and now the Roadrunners get to finally get this thing going.
One Reason Why Baylor Will Win
Okay, so what did Baylor do right in the ugly collapse to Liberty?
Anu Solomon was okay, throwing for 278 yards and three scores, and taking off for a team-high 97 yards. He has to carry way too much of the load in a banged up Bear backfield, but he’s a veteran who can throw just enough to keep things moving.
The offense put up 45 points and 532 yards – it wasn’t necessarily the problem. It didn’t help that the Bears struggled on third downs, but the O did its job. However …
One Reason Why UTSA Will Win
Uhhhhhh, Baylor defense?
It wasn’t just that the BU D was bad, it’s that it was bad and couldn’t get off the field.
Liberty converted a whopping 15-of-24 third down chances and both of its fourth down tries. It didn’t turn the ball over, and it held on to it for a whopping 38:16.
Helping the UTSA overall cause is a Baylor offense that will once again be without star RB Terence Williams, and now will also miss JaMycal Hasty, who got hurt against the Flames.
Considering the run D is probably going to be an issue for UTSA to start the year, it’s catching a massive break.
What’s Going To Happen
UTSA is good enough to pull this off, but it’ll come up just short.
Baylor will have defensive problems again, and it’ll be ugly at times when the Roadrunners go on long marches, but the explosion will be there form Solomon and WR Chris Platt to get out alive.
It won’t be satisfying, but it’ll be better than losing to Liberty.
