Venue: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
San Diego State was fine. It got out to a 38-3 lead on UC Davis, let up late, and the final score – 38-17 – looked closer than the game actually was.
Arizona State was fine. New Mexico State made it really, really interesting in the fourth quarter – pulling within six in an 18-point final frame – but the Sun Devil offense was just fine throwing the ball.
But the horrible Sun Devil defense of last season still has to prove it can stop someone’s passing game, while the Aztecs need to have al the new defensive parts working right away with ASU this week and Stanford to follow.
Win these two, and the two-time defending Mountain West champ has the inside track to the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six opening.
If ASU loses, and the Todd Graham hot seat talk fires up to a whole other level.
One Reason Why San Diego State Will Win
The ASU secondary that was so miserable last season doesn’t appear to be any better – at least early on.
New Mexico State QB Tyler Rogers threw for almost 400 yards with three scores in the wild comeback attempt, and SDSU proved it could throw a little.
Christian Chapman came up with an effective 220-yard day in the win over UC Davis, but it was the ground game that owned the offense with Rashaad Penny pacing the way with 197 yards and two scores.
ASU won’t be able to stop any of it.
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
San Diego State reloads at this point defensively, but this is still going to be a work in progress for parts of the puzzle. If Manny Wilkins can be as sharp as he was in the opener against NMSU, the Sun Devil offense should move.
While the ground game didn’t work at all when Kalen Ballage wasn’t grinding away, Wilkins managed to hit 22-of-27 passes for 300 yards and two scores.
UC Davis’s Jake Maier didn’t crank up the passing game on SDSU until late, but he hit 19-of-24 passes on the day. Wilkins should complete a whole slew of passes to keep control of the tempo and game at times.
What’s Going To Happen
The San Diego State run defense will step up and stuff everything Arizona State tries to do on the ground, while Wilkins will be under just enough pressure all game long to make a few key mistakes.
There won’t be anything too pretty about the San Diego State offense, but against this Sun Devil D, the passing yards will be there when they have to be to go along with a grinding day from the ground attack.
