Yawn. Another year, another opener against a great team, another dominant performance by Alabama to show that, without question, it’s the No. 1 team in the country.
It might not have been a smooth win over Florida State, and it might not have been great offensively, but that was a loaded team on the other side of the ball. The Seminoles are full of NFL talents, and even though it was a battle, the Crimson Tide still won by 17 points.
And that was it.
There will be a few tussles here and there, but for the most part, that was it for the nasty battles for Bama until the LSU showdown in November.
For Fresno State, it’s all about trying to do something right to keep moving forward after opening up the season with a blowout win.
It’s going to be a long way back under new head coach Jeff Tedford, but he put together a good coaching staff, he appears to have the offense ready to be far better than it was in 2016, and his team gets a beaten up Bama team coming off the tough, physical opener.
One Reason Why Fresno State Will Win
Yes, while Alabama was busy trying to get past Florida State, Fresno State was dealing with Incarnate Word. However, the Bulldogs finally showed a sign of offensive life for the first time in a while thanks to Chason Virgil.
All the Bulldog offensive weapons were solid, but it was Virgil who thrived the game into an early rout finishing with 246 yards and a score.
Meanwhile, the defense put on a clinic, stuffing the Cardinals for -30 rushing yards and just a few positive plays overall.
Duh, Alabama will be a wee bit more physical, but Fresno State might not be the same defensive pushover it’s been over the years.
One Reason Why Alabama Will Win
The Crimson Tide defense was back to normal against a dangerous group of superstar-talent running backs.
Florida State’s offense couldn’t move anywhere when Deondre Francois wasn’t making things happen. Top recruit Cam Akers had a decent run, but was held to 30 yards overall. As a team, FSU managed just 1.5 yards per carry.
The Bulldogs don’t have the physical talent up front to provide any sort of a push against the Bama front three, and that means Virgil will have to get on the move. He didn’t run at all against Incarnate Word, and now the Tide linebackers – even without Christian Miller – should be able to tee off.
What’s Going To Happen
There will be a wee bit of a hangover after the Florida State game – that was a war in the trenches that got really, really physical – but it won’t matter. Fresno State will come up with a score, but that’ll be about it.
Be shocked if the Bulldogs net more than 20 rushing yards.
