Washington (0-0) vs. Rutgers (0-0) Game Preview

While Washington isn’t being totally ignored or underrated, the Pac-12 talk has been all about USC, Oregon, Josh Rosen, Stanford, and the improvement of the league overall.

However, there’s a shot the Huskies are even better than the team that got to the College Football Playoff last year. This is the chance to prove it with a blowout win at Rutgers.

No one’s asking the Scarlet Knights to show up and shock the defending Pac-12 champs, but being just wee bit better after losing the 2016 opener 48-13 would be nice.

Head coach Chris Ash is still in the rebuilding process, and it’s going to take several baby steps to keep getting better. There have to be a few nice moments to provide hope that this could be a stronger year after going 2-10.

This isn’t the team to face when you’re trying to make a big improvement.

One Reason Why Washington Will Win

Yes, the Rutgers offense will be better.

Yes, the passing game will be a bit stronger, and yes, the overall attack will average more than 283 yards per game and will score more than 16 points an outing.

But maybe not against this Washington defense.

Seven starters are back to the killer Dawg D that will be a rock against the run and should eventually be just fine in the secondary. The defensive backs have to reload, but overall, nine of the top 11 tacklers are back from the nation’s 12th-best defense.

Uh oh.

One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win

The offense really will be better.

Former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill is taking over at offensive coordinator, and Louisville transfer Kyle Bolin has earned the starting quarterback job – but that’s written in pencil – bringing in a few more options to change things up.

Rutgers has a talent gap, but Ash went with a youth movement last year overall, and has a potentially dangerous receiving corps for Bolin to work around with Janarion Grant back from injury along with Jawuan Harris.

Now Bolin needs time to get them the ball.

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers is better, but it’s not going to look like it against this loaded Washington defense.

Jake Browning will have an efficient day, but he won’t have to do too much to bomb away with the UW ground game pounding away at will.

The Rutgers running game won’t work in any way, but the offense will have a few okay moments. But this is a College Football Playoff-good Washington team, and it’s about to look like it.
