One Reason Why William & Mary Will Win

It’s not like the school hasn’t been able to win this game in the past, coming up with six victories in the 35-game series, providing a fight two years ago in a 35-29 loss.

There were a slew of big problems will last year’s 5-6 Tribe team, but it ended up finishing No. 1 in the FCS in pass defense allowing a mere seven touchdowns on the season and 154 yards per game. Once again, the secondary should be a rock with a fantastic pair of veteran corners and a ball-hawking safety in Corey Parker.

Considering the Virginia offense has to prove it can be even a wee bit efficient – and the attack as a whole has to start to produce – there’s a chance the Tribe forces this to come down to the ground game. Keep the score low, have a shot in the end. However …

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

Part of the reason the William & Mary pass defense stats were so strong is because of everyone ran the ball.

There’s not a whole bunch of bulk on the front seven outside of 310-pound Isaiah Stephens, but Virginia still has to prove it can get physical up front and a new group of backs can produce.

Rely on a stronger defense, try pounding away from the start, hope to wear down the Tribe.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia will be in more of a fight than it might like.

Of course, the biggest storyline around this game is Robert Lee being taken off the call by ESPN, but William & Mary should be able to make some noise if it can grind the game out and stay alive just long enough to hope for a few big breaks.

The Cavalier defense will be too good, and QB Kurt Benkert will be just sharp enough to get by, but it won’t be easy for about three quarters.
