UNLV Kicks Off Season Against Howard
Time to see what the Rebels offense can be with Armani Rogers
The regular season is here.
After entering 2016 with slightly heightened expectations (specifically on offense), UNLV’s season quickly went downhill as the team was ravaged by injuries at the wide receiver position, and inconsistent play at quarterback.
As a result, the team only improved their win total by one game to finish the season at 4-8. Luckily, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Rebels’ offense as they were one of the top rushing offenses in 2016.
Flash forward to 2017 and UNLV is ready to take their offense to the next step and help the team go from re-builder to bowl eligible, and they should have the firepower to do so. Once again the Rebels are entering the season loaded at wide receiver and running back.
At quarterback, UNLV is hoping that a switch to redshirt freshman Armani Rogers will allow the offense to tap into some explosive plays as well as some consistency.
And on Saturday, Rogers and the offense will get their first opportunity to showcase exactly what they can do when they play host to the Howard Bison at Sam Boyd stadium.
In Howard, UNLV will see a team that like themselves, are re-building. After going 2-9 in 2016, the Bison enter 2017 with a new head coach in Mike London and will be looking to get off to a fast start. But they might have to wait a week as this game looks to mirror last years’ season opener in which the Rebels put up 63 points.
With that said, UNLV’s offense should have a chance to shine in front of the home crowd and give everyone something to look forward to as the season progresses.
Kickoff is Saturday at 6pm PT and can be viewed on the Mountain West Sports Network.
