Oh will this be fun.

There might be a coaching turnover at Eastern Washington, and there might be a few key parts gone, but it’s 2016’s No. 1 FCS passing attack vs. No. 1 FBS passing attack.

And the pressure is all on Texas Tech to be just a little bit better.

The hot seat is flaming under Red Raider head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and if he can’t get by the FCSer on the slate, good luck over the next three weeks against Arizona State, Houston and Oklahoma State.

For the preseason No. 4 Eagles, though, this is their moment. Beat the Red Raiders, and all of a sudden, the transition to the Aaron Best coaching era will be smooth as glass.

No matter what, be disappointed if the two teams don’t combine for the most passing yards in any game of the weekend.

One Reason Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Does Texas Tech have a defense yet? The last thing the miserable, reworked D needs to start the season is get ripped apart in a firefight. Eastern Washington might be working through its new coaching staff, but the offense returns seven starters from a group that averaged 380 passing yards and 36 points per game. The Eagles will keep up the pace.

One Reason Why Texas Tech Will Win

Eastern Washington’s passing game is good, but even without Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech’s will be better.

Yes, EWU beat Washington State to open up last season, and yes, the Eagle pass defense came up with a strong year overall. But the Cougars cranked up 418 yards and four scores with a whole slew of deep plays in the 45-42 loss.

New year, new teams, but assume the Red Raiders will hit the 400-yard mark with ease. Expect new starting quarterback Nic Shimonek to go off now that he’s getting his shot to shine – he’s been great so far in practices.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be stunned if Eastern Washington pulls this off. It might be a case of the last team with the ball pulling off the win, with the Texas Tech defense not looking any better than it did at the end of last year.  However, it’ll have more of the combined 800 passing yards in a wild and crazy win.
