Is it possible that Tulsa can derail a potentially amazing season before it gets started?
Almost no one is going out on a limb to suggest that Oklahoma State will win the Big 12 title, but it’s loaded enough to get into the new conference championship game, and it gets Oklahoma at home in the regular season.
With a loaded offense full of stars, a defense that should be just good enough to get by, and the pieces in place to potentially make an interesting run to the College Football Playoff, this should easily be the best Cowboy team since 12-1 2011 juggernaut – the last time the two teams played.
But again, Tulsa can screw all of that up.
The Golden Hurricane have to reload the devastating offense that ripped through just about everyone last year on the way to a 6-1 finishing kick in a ten-win season.
At the very least, you need to pay attention to what happens – this should be a firefight worth watching for the big plays on both sides.
One Reason Why Tulsa Will Win
Yeah, most of the stars are gone from an offense that finished fourth in the nation, but the system is still terrific, and the line is loaded with four starters back to what should be among the best front fives in the American Athletic Conference.
This is a team built to keep pace with everyone and anyone. Even with the new guys for the passing game being thrown to the wolves, the O should be able to hang with the Cowboys for a full four quarters.
Throw in a good-enough secondary with a nice pair of veteran corners and safety Jordan Mitchell – the team’s second-leading retiring tackler – and Tulsa is more than just a great offense. However …
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Even with All-America WR James Washington fighting through a hernia problem, the Oklahoma State offense will be unstoppable.
The Golden Hurricane might have a good enough defense to hold serve here and there, but it’s going to get hit up the gut when the Cowboys want to power away.
The passing game will be the passing game – QB Mason Rudolph will come out roaring – but it’s RB Justice Hill who’ll have the big game behind a great day from the O line. There will be enough balance to keep control of the game – Tulsa won’t be able to keep up.
What’s Going To Happen
Have fun with this. Get ready for lots and lots of points, lots and lots of yards, and both offenses looking fantastic. Tulsa will play well enough to hang around and be annoying, but the Cowboys will pull away in the fourth quarter with Hill and the ground game taking over.
