Northwestern (0-0) vs. Nevada (0-0) Game Preview
Okay, so let’s see how this thing flies.
Of course, Northwestern is the main storyline – with a great team returning and needing to rock right away after starting last year 0-2 against Western Michigan and Illinois State – but Nevada’s new Air Raid offense should be fun.
New Wolf Pack head coach Jay Norvell is trying to instantly pivot the program into a high-powered pass-first/pass-often team. It might have led to the transfer of star RB James Butler – Northwestern will see him later when it plays Iowa – but now the offense is a wild card the Wildcats have to be ready to deal with.
With a trip to Duke next and Bowling Green to follow, this might be the scariest game for a veteran Northwestern team. If it all works, get ready for a shootout.
One Reason Why Nevada Will Win
As if it isn’t hard enough for Northwestern to try preparing for a new offense and a new staff, it still doesn’t know which quarterback will be the main man.
Alabama transfer David Cornwell has been battling with Ty Gangi for the right to run the passing attack, and the receivers are there to make it all fly with Wyatt Demps and Andrew Celis about to blow up statistically.
Generating a consistent pass rush will be an early concern for the Wildcats, but the real question is the secondary – at least in this game. It’ll be a positive if everyone is healthy, but it’s about to be under intense pressure from the start.
One Reason Why Northwestern Will Win
While the excitement might be around a Nevada offense that’s going to show off its new style, Northwestern’s offense might put up the big numbers.
Yeah, 18 of the top 20 tacklers are back on the Wolf Pack D, but they were awful last year.
NU RB Justin Jackson should be able to run at will on a porous defensive front, and the secondary has to figure out how to make more big plays after coming up with just five interceptions.
If you want to see what 500 yards of Northwestern offense looks like, this should be the game.
What’s Going To Happen
The Air Raid isn’t going to work like it’s supposed to quite yet.
Nevada will throw almost 60 passes, but Northwestern won’t let them go anywhere with sure tackling keeping the dinks and dunks to a minimum. The Cats will be balanced, efficient, and in control all game long.
Don’t be shocked if Northwestern has the ball for over 40 minutes.
