Freshman All-American. First-team All-Mountain West safety. What’s next for the Wyoming star?

Try to think of another safety who’s accomplished as much in two years as Wyoming’s Andrew Wingard, the next entrant on our countdown. After leading all freshman defenders in tackles back in 2015, Wingard took another step forward by finishing fourth nationally with 131 total tackles last fall.

He also finished second among Mountain West defensive backs with 7.5 tackles for loss and chipped in two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two sacks for an opportunistic Cowboys defense that ranked 11th in the conference in yards per play allowed but finished behind only San Diego State in takeaways and sacks.

Wingard might have been the most obvious preseason all-Mountain West selection made last month, but he’s also been named to the Bednarik, Nagurski and Thorpe Award watch lists. With a brighter spotlight on and higher expectations for the men in Laramie, Wingard will definitely have a chance to raise his national profile even further.
