Look for Baldwin to be everywhere on the field this fall.
It should come as no surprise by now that the Aztecs defense is well represented on this year’s list of the Mountain West’s top 50 football players, and our next selection, outside of his role in that excellent unit, is no exception.
Parker Baldwin didn’t start last year as the team’s “Aztec” defender but, after taking over for the injured Na’im McGee, he shined once he found his way into the starting lineup. He finished 2016 with 66 tackles, including three tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and two interceptions. Despite starting just nine games, Baldwin was a significant reason why the Aztecs’ defensive backs finished fifth nationally in Bill Connelly’s Havoc Rate metric (percentage of TFLs, forced fumbles and passes defended).
If that weren’t enough, Baldwin also got the nod as Connelly’s pick for the best defender in the conference back in April and was a second-team all-conference selection by Phil Steele. Heading into his junior year, there’s little doubt that Baldwin will be at the center of whatever San Diego State wants to do defensively this fall.
