The best tight end in the conference is a perfect fit for SDSU’s ground attack.
The next athlete on our countdown of the Mountain West’s 50 best athletes is San Diego State tight end David Wells. Oddly enough, players at his position are a rare sight on the 2017 list — our staff voted for just two tight ends — but Wells is a cut above the rest of the MWC for more reasons than those on the stat sheet.
In 2016, Wells was a reliable target for Christian Chapman, catching 25 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns. That may not sound like much, but Wells had only 29 targets, giving him an astounding 86% catch rate. He also contributed as perhaps the best blocking tight end in the conference, helping pave the way for a running game that averaged 5.79 yards per carry, the seventh-best average in the nation.
As a senior, he’ll be counted upon to help ease the transition to a new offensive line, but don’t be shocked if the Aztecs produce much like they did last year and Wells is a Mackey Award semifinalist later this fall.
