Kansas State is sort of playing a decent non-conference game at Vanderbilt in a few weeks, but before that it’s doing it right.
Why not gear up for the big games with a few scrimmages? And that’s what the Wildcats are doing with Charlotte next and UCA to start, getting a chance to get the linebacking corps in place, work on the downfield passing game, and get all the things rolling for what should be a good Big 12 run.
In a good way, UCA isn’t a total dud. The team that went 10-3 last season returns a tough defense, a good enough offense to put a few points on the board, and just enough positives to make Kansas State try.
One Reason Why Central Arkansas Will Win
The defense is the star – with a great group against the run that’ll attack well and would be able to come up with its share of stops to keep this interesting – but the key will be the O line.
The Bears get back everyone up front for a good ground game, while QB Hayden Hildebrand is a heady veteran who won’t wilt in the big-game atmosphere.
One Reason Why Kansas State Will Win
Power, power, power. Kansas State isn’t going to start winging the ball all around the yard anyway, but against UCA, the ground game will barrel through the middle of the line that loses its top tackles off a great run defense.
This is the game to help make the passing game more efficient and start doing more with the receiving corps, but the offensive line will be the star along with with the great blocking tandem of FB Winston Dimel and TE Dayton Valentine. The Wildcats will pound out 200 yards without a problem.
What’s Going To Happen
It’ll take at least a half to get it all going.
Kansas State will be a little sluggish offensively early on, but the defense will make up for it. UCA will put up a wee bit of a fight, but it won’t be able to consistently score enough to take advantage of early opportunities. The Wildcats will pull away in the second half, but it won’t be the overall performance they’ll be hoping for.
