2017 CFN Preview
Iowa Preview | Wyoming Preview

Just how good is Iowa? Are the Hawkeyes going to be good enough be a real, live challenge in the Big Ten West race? Are they going to have a downfield passing game to go along with the great ground game and defense?

Just how good is Wyoming? One of the surprise teams of last season has a superstar pro prospect in QB Josh Allen, a great system with a dynamic offense, and the upside and expectations to do even more after shocking the Mountain West world and getting into the conference title game.

With a rivalry date at Iowa State up next, the last thing the Hawkeyes need is to stumble at home out of the gate, but considering they whiffed last year against North Dakota State – the program Wyoming head man Craig Bohl helped make amazing – they have to be careful.

This is the third time the two teams have plays – Iowa won in 1953 and took down the Cowboys in 1987 Holiday Bowl.

One Reason Why Wyoming Will Win

Will Iowa be able to come up with a downfield pass? The Hawkeye ground game should be amazing, but last season the offense averaged just 6.4 yards per throw, and that was with C.J. Beathard – who’s now a part of the San Francisco 49er system – under center.

Nathan Stanley was named the starting quarterback after battling with Tyler Wiegers for the job, and he’s got the arm and upside to be the answer.

However, Wyoming’s defensive strength is in the secondary with a loaded group of likely All-Mountain West talents. With a decent pass rush, Iowa will have a few problems airing it out, but …

One Reason Why Iowa Will Win

There’s a chance the Hawkeyes won’t need to throw a forward pass.

The Iowa ground game was already going to be terrific with Akrum Wadley tearing off runs behind an outstanding line, and then the program added on James Butler, an all-star caliber back from Nevada who transferred in.

The Wyoming pass D might have the stars, but the front seven is a wee bit sketchy. The tackles are just okay, the linebackers will make too many plays down the field, and Iowa should control the game by tearing off yards in chunks.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa will come out of the gate roaring.

The formula will work, with the Hawkeyes running for over 200 yards, while the defense will be a rock against the dangerous Cowboy ground attack.

And Allen? He’ll be under siege all game long.

He’ll have a few, “yeah, that’s an NFL quarterback” moments, but he’ll be under way too much pressure. Four starters are back for the Cowboy O line, but the Hawkeyes front four will be frothing at the mouth.
