Jasad Haynes Earned A Scholarship In Spring
The walk-on got a pick me up after hearing his car was towed.
The defensive tackle describes the moment he earned a scholarship.
Fresno State defensive tackle Jasad Haynes is a former walk-on but now has earned his spot as one of 85 scholarship players for the Bulldogs.
With Jeff Tedford and a new staff in Fresno, the redshirt sophomore did all he could during spring to prove he was deserving of a scholarship. The news came during spring football and after one of the worst days Haynes could have had. He left practice only to find out that his car was towed.
“It was a very interesting day,” Haynes told BarkBoard.com after Friday’s practice. “I was about to get my backpack out of my car, and my car was gone. My car got repoed. I was like ‘Aw, man.’ They took my car all the way to Tracy, California. I talked to my defensive coordinator, Coach (Orlondo Steinauer). We just talked for about an hour about life.”
Tedford was going to make it a surprise to award Haynes a scholarship after spring ball, but the new coach decided his defensive tackles need a pick me up.
“I got a call from Coach Tedford and he said, ‘I heard what happened and I’ve seen what you’ve been doing in spring ball. I was going to tell you a week after spring ball, but I felt like you need to hear this now. I’m going to put you on scholarship.’
“I just froze. I didn’t know what to say. I’ve been waiting to hear that for six years and I finally achieved my goal,” Haynes said. “I feel like I accomplished something. One of my biggest fears is failure, so when I feel like I accomplish one of my goals, it’s hard to explain. It’s just a blessing, man, a true blessing.”
Haynes has earned this scholarship as he put in the work during spring, summer and heading into fall camp he was listed as one of the starting defensive tackles for this Bulldogs defense.
