Former Georgia Punt Returner Isaiah McKenzie Earns Starting Job With Broncos
Former UGA speedster Isaiah McKenzie is turning heads at the NFL level with the Denver Broncos.
The “Human Joystick” surprised many Bulldog faithful and the Georgia coaching staff when he declared early for the 2017 NFL draft.
The Fort Lauderdale native’s gamble paid off as he was drafted in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos. And after two weeks of practice, the Broncos named McKenzie the starting punt returner.
According to the Denver Post, Broncos’ head coach Vance Joseph stated, “He’s the punt returner; that’s why he was drafted.”
Joseph continued, “He’s a guy who can catch the ball. That’s critical as a punt returner. We’ve all seen guys who can really run fast but can’t catch the football. He can catch the football. So I trust him to be our guy Week 1 against the Chargers.”
McKenzie has drawn praise from his Denver teammates and the coaching staff during camp. He has also been seeing a lot of reps as the primary slot receiver.
“He’s fast. That’s another thing that we were talking about. Speed kills. He’s as fast as he can be,” Joseph said. “Having that mobility, you can put him anywhere or line him up anywhere, and he can make plays anytime. He’s a homerun threat. If we put him in the right position to make those plays, his talent will flourish.”
