The Mountain West figures to be very competitive in 2017, but who do we think will come out on top?
On the heels of our preseason all-conference selections, our staff also debated how the Mountain West teams would stack up when all is said and done. Would Colorado State make good on its second-half tear last fall? Would Boise State climb back to the top of the Mountain division, and would anyone give San Diego State a run for its money?
As it turned out, our staff thinks that the Mountain division will reflect the competitiveness of the last couple years. Three different teams earned a first-place vote from the twelve voters on our staff. In the end, though, Boise State edged out Colorado State, a trendy preseason pick in many other corners of the college football universe.
The West division was a little more clear cut: Rocky Long’s Aztecs earned 11 out of 12 first-place votes, meaning that the race for second place was the most interesting data point. Hawaii edged out both Nevada and UNLV, perhaps suggesting that our staff is confident that second-year head coach Nick Rolovich can keep the Warriors from taking a step back after surprising many last fall.
Mountain – Boise State (63), Colorado State (58), Wyoming (52), New Mexico (30), Air Force (28), Utah State (21)
West – San Diego State (70), Hawaii (48), Nevada (42), UNLV (40), San Jose State (31), Fresno State (21)
