A disruptive defense returns many of its stars, including the productive force in the middle.
San Diego State’s stingy 3-3-5 defense may have lost a few key pieces from their back-to-back title teams, but the Mountain West Wire football top 50 has five athletes from this elite unit, beginning with our next selection.
Sergio Phillips, the Aztecs defensive tackle, stepped into a starting role in 2016 and compiled 42 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He played his best football in the Mountain West championship against Wyoming, making ten tackles and recording one sack, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him take another step forward as a quiet star for one of the Group of 5’s best defenses.
