Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
The Gary Andersen Bowl might not be quite as good as it was a few years ago.
Anderson – then the Utah State head coach – came really, really, really close to pulling off a shocker over Wisconsin in a 16-14 loss in 2012. Little did anyone know that it was a great audition for his next gig, the next head coach of the Badgers.
Of course, now Andersen is the leader of the Oregon State Beavers, and this Wisconsin team is stronger than the 2012 version, and the Utah State team isn’t going to be the killer that finished 11-2 the last time it was in Madison.
It’s hardly the killer non-conference game Bucky had to deal with last season when it started things off against LSU, but a few warmups might be vital with this, and then Florida Atlantic, to get ready for a trip to BYU.
The Aggies should be far better, though, after a rough 2016, with a good-looking secondary and just enough potential offensive firepower to test the rebuilding Badger secondary.
Wisconsin should be Wisconsin when it has to, pushing and shoving its way through the first half, and then letting the defense take over in the second. It’ll take a while for the Badgers to wake up, but they’ll be able to relax in the fourth quarter.
