Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
For the fourth straight season, Rutgers opens up the year with a team from Washington – playing Washington State two years in a row before losing to the Huskies last season 48-13 in the opener.
This time around, the Scarlet Knights have to face the defending Pac-12 champs, but this time it’s at home.
Yes, going across the country to face a team that finished 2-10 last year represents the hard part of the Washington non-conference schedule – facing Montana and Fresno State next – meaning it’s muscle flexing time. Rutgers might be better, but if Washington really is a CFP-worthy team again, this is a game it has to win in a walk.
There’s a little work to do on the offensive line, to build up the defense again, and to establish a No. 1 target with John Ross gone, but Huskies are loaded again. Now the spotlight will be on more, and with everyone watching, Jake Browning and company have to look great.
Can the Scarlet Knight lines hold up well enough to make this a game? Can the defensive front generate enough pressure on Jake Browning? Rutgers will come up with a good first quarter, but the Husky defense will dominate the rest of the way.
