Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Florida State is battling with Alabama. That’s the only other game in the opinion weekend between two teams that played at a New Year’s Six level – or better – bowl last season.
Of course, Western Michigan isn’t your normal powerhouse program that plays in massive post-season games, and, of course, it’s a different team now without head coach P.J. Fleck, star WR Corey Davis, and a slew of big parts. This is still the start of the MAC with a fantastic backfield, strong linebacking corps, and the league’s best O line.
The Broncos aren’t going to be road kill for the Trojans, and if they are, that’ll show just how dangerous the Fighting Darnolds are.
USC has to fight through this, then Stanford, and then Texas. All three are at home, and all three are winnable, but by how much?
The Trojans have a terrific defensive back seven, but they have to restock the shelves on the defensive front and receiving corps. That isn’t going to matter too much as long as Sam Darnold is getting time to operate against what should be a strong WMU pass rush.
That’s not going to be a problem.
Yeah, the Broncos are good, but USC will show what it’ll be in everyone’s preseason top five, if not top two. Unlike last year when they got steamrolled by Alabama to kick things off, the Trojans will be outstanding from the start.
