In terms if Sunshine State swag, to kick off a big Thursday night of games, this is as interesting as it gets with the beginning of the Butch Davis regime at FIU against a UCF team that rose up last year under Scott Frost, and now has to show it’s ready to make a big splash right away.

While no one is expecting miracles right away out of Davis, yeah, it’s Butch Davis, so maybe a mini-miracle would be nice. Meanwhile, this is the season when Frost is supposed to go from a good coaching prospect to a superstar. That can’t happen by losing to FIU.

It’s a measuring stick showdown in plenty of ways. UCF won 53-14 in Miami last year and FIU won the 2015 season opener 15-14 – UCF has a 3-2 lead in the five recent meetings.

UCF dives into the American Athletic season against Memphis after this, while Davis and UCF gets a breather against Alcorn State.

One Reason Why FIU Will Win

The Golden Panther run defense should be relatively solid right away. It got ripped up late last season by the better offenses, but new defensive coordinator Brent Guy – the former Utah State head coach – has a fantastic linebacking corps to build around and experience up front.

FIU might not have a special D that’ll dominate the Conference USA world, but until UCF shows it can start running a bit – not a given after a disastrous second half of last season on the ground – it’ll have to bomb away to beat Butch. However …

One Reason Why UCF Will Win

The Knights have the receivers to start cranking things up a few levels.

Consistent passing was a problem at times in the up-tempo offense, and the offense was a disaster on third downs, but with WR Tre’Quan Smith, the tight end combination of Jordan Akins and Jordan Franks, and the talent to push the ball down the field, the offense should work.

What’s Going To Happen

The UCF passing game will be solid, the defense will be a rock up front – America, welcome back to LB Shaquem Griffin and DE Jamiyus Pittman –  and the team will look like it’ll be in for a big second season under Frost. FIU won’t be blown out like it was last season, but it won’t be able to keep up the pace.
