Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Is it possible for Maryland just to score?
The two programs have played three times, with the last showdown a 42-0 Texas win in your 1978 Sun Bowl. But the Longhorns won the other times, too, beating the Terps by a combined score of 102-0.
Of course, the main focus will be on the debut of Tom Herman as the new Texas head coach. If it’s possible to win a national title in Week One, that’s where the expectations are going to be for the rising star who’s taking over a loaded team.
And on the flip side, is this when Maryland is able to make a giant national splash in the season season under D.J. Durkin?
After losing five of the last six games last season – but getting to a bowl game – but coming off a huge offseason thanks to a great recruiting class, beating Texas would quickly change the narrative about what the Terps could be.
Maryland has the defense to make this more of a battle than Herman and Texas fans might like, but the Longhorn O line should be able to blast away – if this all goes like it’s supposed to.
Considering what Herman was able to do at Houston against Oklahoma to start last year, nothing less than a dominant performance will be expected. But the Terps will put up a good fight.
