Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.

Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?

It’s the last game of the first big weekend of the season, and it’s the end of the ACC-SEC challenge.

Alabama and Florida State will play a bigger showdown in Atlanta’s shiny new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and South Carolina and NC State will be getting it on in Charlotte, but the this will be the final say.

It’s the first game of the rest of Tennessee’s life, while Georgia Tech will try to establish some sort of home city advantage – even if Vols fans might invade the new stadium.

Tennessee wasn’t that miserable, but the defense went bye-bye, the loss to Vanderbilt was ugly, and even with a run of four wins in the final five games, it wasn’t an SEC championship season.

It’s a rebuilding year in several ways, but that doesn’t matter – Tennessee is overdue to win the SEC East. With this and Indiana State to use as warm-ups before facing Florida in Gainesville, the Vols need to be sharp from the start.

Last year, they sputtered out of the gate in a miracle win over Appalachian State, but this year, even with all the changes, they need to look the part.

Georgia Tech get Jacksonville State and UCF before dealing with Pitt and North Carolina to start the ACC run. But beating Tennessee would be a huge moment for a program that went 3-0 vs. the SEC East last season.

As always, the Tech running game will be outstanding, but the quarterback situation will be a question mark going into the fall practices.

The Yellow Jacket defensive backs should do their part to keep down a relatively new Tennessee receiving corps, but the game will come down to the Vol defensive front seven.

With a whole summer to prepare for the option, Tennessee should be okay up front – it’ll be far better than it was at the end of the regular season. It might not be a dominant, blowout performance, but it’ll be a satisfying opener for a Vol team that – again, after last year’s start – needs to come out hot.

It won’t matter if it’s Quinten Dormady or Jarrett Guarantano – the starting Tennessee quarterback will look great.

The two programs used to play on a regular basis, but they haven’t met since 1987 – a 29-15 Tennessee win.
