Preview 2017: South Alabama The Sun Belt’s Big Tease
After being the Sun Belt’s big tease, can South Alabama be more consistent?
South Alabama was the Sun Belt’s big tease.
It was good enough to start out the season with a shocking 21-20 win over Mississippi State, and it was talented enough to stun a San Diego State team that ended up winning the Mountain West title and dominate Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl.
And it was weird enough to get out to an 0-4 Sun Belt start.
With eight games decided by a touchdown or less, the Jaguars managed to be in just about every game, but the consistency wasn’t always a good thing. At some point, the program has to become consistently great.
USA has won six games in three of the last four years, and five in the one other season, but it can’t seem to quite turn the corner. Its still only the ninth year of the football program’s existence, but it’s time to be in the hunt. It’s time to be in the Sun Belt title discussion.
The offense has veterans on the line and in the backfield, but it missing receiving weapons. The defense should be among the best in the Sun Belt if the injured parts of the front four are back to former form, while the back seven should be terrific.
It’s okay to be good, but not when you’ve shown the potential and ability to be something more. Going into the ninth year of existence, it’s time to make big wins over bigger name programs more of the norm.
And it’s time to win more Sun Belt games and be in the title chase, too.
