Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It’s the first game of the rest of Oklahoma’s life.
Lincoln Riley will be the first new Sooner head man on the sidelines since the late 1998, but the aura of Bob Stoops will be over the team right out of the gate.
With the trip to Ohio State up next, this is more than just the warm-up moment. This is when the Sooner program has to flex a little muscle to prove that the fundamentals of the program are still strong.
Considering last season OU started out the season with a clunker against Houston, and with the hype and attention on the Riley debut, how can this be anything other than total and complete domination?
UTEP will attempt to be more than a speed bump, but the passing game isn’t in place to keep up, and the secondary doesn’t have a prayer of coming up with enough stops once the Sooner machine gets rolling.
The Sooners should be able to call their shot, with the backups getting plenty of action in the second half. And if it’s anything different, the panic sirens will go off the entire week before going to Columbus.
Expect this to be a frightening exhibition of Oklahoma firepower.
