Welcome to the first look and picks for the biggest games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It’s the new world of Big Ten football, with a few funky games at odd times, including this one to kick off the conference season.
Ohio State got a little bit of a push last season in a 38-17 win, but this time around could be more difficult. Not only is it a league game right out of the gate, but it’s IU going against its former head coach – now OSU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson – with plenty of easy storylines and lots of motivation.
How quickly did the Buckeyes reload this time around? Last year they hung up 77 on Bowling Green to open things up, and kept on rolling from there through the first month of the season – up until facing IU.
The big payoff for the Buckeyes for playing this game in Bloomington is the time off to prepare for Week Two. No matter what happens, there’s nine days off to get ready for Oklahoma, while Indiana goes to Virginia to follow.
The Hoosiers have the linebackers and defensive backs to keep the OSU offense from blowing up, but is the D line in place to hold up once the Buckeyes start pounding? Can IU keep the terrific Buckeye defensive line from camping out in the backfield?
An inspired IU will keep the game close into the second half, and the avalanche will come. The Buckeyes will break the game open with a few quick scoring drives off of two takeaways before coasting in the fourth.
