Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It’s only the third ever meeting between the two, with Notre Dame winning the first battle to open the 2013 season 28-6, and taking down the 2015 game between the eventual ten-win teams in a 24-20 dogfight.
The Irish get Georgia after this before going on the road to face Boston College and Michigan State, while the Owls get relative breathers vs. Villanova and UMass.
It’s the Temple head coaching debut of Geoff Collins, and he has plenty of work to do to revamp the defending American Athletic Conference champs on both sides of the ball.
The offensive backfield needs a boost, and most of the star producers are gone on defense, but the receiving corps is dangerous, the O line should be fine, and the attitude should be right under the new coaching staff.
The Fighting Irish have to come out roaring. It’s a new year with a new starting quarterback (Brandon Wimbush) and a new offensive coordinator (Chip Long), but it’s an old offensive line and solid defensive back seven that should kick off the season strong.
Temple is still good – even with all the changes. The score will be kept in check early on, but Wimbush will show off the season’s promise and potential with a great second half to help the Irish pull away.
It might not be easy, but it’ll be a good, effective win to calm the Irish nerves after all that happened last year.
