Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
How good is your coach? With an entire offseason to prepare, can you have your team ready for the Navy option attack?
That’ll be the task for Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin at home.
The guy who coached the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and served as offensive coordinator extraordinaire for Alabama, now gets to apply his trade in Boca Raton. But his team has to come up with a gem to deal with the always dangerous Midshipmen.
The Owls might have a dangerous offensive backfield, but they’re going to have a really, really hard time keeping up the pace with a Navy offense that’ll rumble at will.
FAU doesn’t have the defensive front to hold up – it doesn’t have the linebackers. It’s one thing to practice for the Navy option, but to deal with the speed and precision in live action is a whole other problem.
The Owls will fire up the offense at home, but Navy is Navy. Its offense and style overcome any environment and any team without a terrific defensive front seven. The Midshipmen will grind the game down to a halt controlling the clock and the action throughout.
