Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Considering the two schools are only a few hours apart, you’d think they’d have been regulars on the non-conference circuit. But this is just the second ever matchup between the two, with the Spartans winning in 2007 and squeaking by with a win in 1981.
In all ways, this is a big moment for Michigan State football.
From the scandal off the field that could potentially dominate the narrative at times this summer, to the far less important 3-9 disaster on the field from last year, at least in terms of the football side of things, what will the reaction be?
This is supposed to be the easier of the two MAC games – with Western Michigan up next – before dealing with Notre Dame. But after struggling way too much early on – even in the good years – the Spartans need to come out roaring.
Bowling Green is coming off a bad season of its own, going from MAC champs to disasters in a rebuilding year. There might not be the firepower of two years ago, but the offense should be just good enough to give the Spartans a little bit of a rough time – for a little while.
The Spartans will line up and blast away on the ground, getting L.J. Scott going early and often. They’ll dominate the time of possession in an easy win that won’t erase all the issues, but will as least be a positive moment for the program.
