Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Welcome to the fun, Coastal Carolina.
A star at the FCS level, the Chanticleers are starting out life as an FBSer with one of the easiest dates possible – an it’s at home.
UMass has won ten games in five years, and hasn’t won more than three games since it made its own move up into FBS level, so there’s no such thing as a layup game. Considering how jacked up Coastal Carolina to play at home in its opener, it’s going to be a tougher out than many might think.
The newest Sun Belt member might not have the lines, and the depth isn’t there to overcome a rash of injuries or other problems, but in the opener, it’s starting 22 should be able to hang around with any mediocre Group of Five team.
Head coach Joe Moglia has done a great job, and he’ll have his team ready, but does he have the horses?
UMass doesn’t have the defensive line to hold up against anyone, and this should become a shootout, but it should have enough offensive pop to survive.
The initial spread is off-the-charts strange. Coastal Carolina isn’t that bad, and UMass certainly isn’t that good.
