Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
For those of your ready for the rematch of the 1987 Holiday Bowl – at 20-19 Iowa win – your day is going to soon be here.
Just the second time the two teams have met – the first a 21-7 Iowa win in 1953 – this should be an interesting moment for two teams with high expectations.
The Hawkeyes were stunned by North Dakota State early last year – Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl’s former team. But while the Bison won with a strong day from the defense and enough of a running game to get by, the Cowboys are going to try getting it done with the hottest name in the New York Jets QB derby – UW QB Josh Allen.
While Iowa will try getting the job done with the offensive line and ground game – as the new starting quarterback and parts in the passing game will need time to gear up – the spotlight will be on the defense to slow down Allen.
This might be a dangerous Wyoming team, but this will be the day for the Hawkeye defensive front. It won’t necessarily be a conservative approach, but run, get to Allen, control the clock – get out alive.
