Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It doesn’t seem to make any sense. Muncie, Indiana is a mere 170 miles away from Champaign, Illinois – that’s nothing in college football road trip world – but the two programs have only met once. Illinois win a 28-17 battle in 2007, but both of those teams were good.
Now this is part of Lovie Smith, Part 2, needing to show a big improvement right out of the gate. With a dangerous Western Kentucky team up next, followed up by a trip to South Florida, and Nebraska and a date at Iowa to follow, there can’t be a slip.
Ball State has the upside to be a sneaky-good factor in the MAC East race. It’s the second year for head coach Mike Neu, and he’s got a team with a whole lot of upside.
James Gilbert is a great running back you haven’t seen, the defensive front is okay, and there’s just enough talent on the lines to keep this from getting out of hand.
Even against an improved Cardinal team, this can’t be a tight battle for the Fighting Illini. The offense will sputter a bit, while the defense will take control with a terrific second half.
