Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Can Appalachian State pull it off this time around?
Yeah, everyone remembers the program for its stunning win over a fantastic Michigan team to kick off the 2007 season, but almost pulling off the win over Tennessee to open up last year was impressive, too.
The Vols weren’t just flat; ASU was that good – suffering a few lucky breaks to lose 20-13.
Against another SEC to open up a campaign, this is an even more dangerous team than last year’s version – it should be the star of the Sun Belt by far – and it’s hardly going to be fazed by the environment.
But can it handle the fantastic Georgia ground game?
A few parts are missing from last year, but the Mountaineer defensive front is more than just feisty – it’ll annoy the Dawgs time and again.
Georgia can play a little D, too, and while the ASU defense might be too good to keep this from getting out of hand, the O will sputter and struggle.
It’ll be a four quarter fight, but it won’t be quite as condition-critical as it was for Tennessee. The Georgia offense will look the part on two critical late drives to put it away – even if this isn’t the layup many Dawg fans might like.
Georgia won the only matchup between the two 45-6 in 2013.
