All You Really Need To Know About Wisconsins
(Big Ten), RPI: 36, 8 seed
Don’t be fooled by the brand name: this isn’t the Wisconsin team you’re used to.
The defense is excellent – as always – and there’s no problem hitting the boards or cranking up the three, but it’s a very, very limited bunch without the talent or moxie of some of the recent Final Four versions. Oh sure, when everything is humming, the Badgers can shut down someone cold – like Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament – but this team just doesn’t have … it.
It can’t hit free throws, played like dogmeat in key stretches throughout February, and when the O isn’t working, it really isn’t working. With all of that said, it’s Wisconsin – it could easily gear it up for a few games and get deep into the second weekend on D alone.
All You Really Need To Know About Virginia Tech
(ACC) RPI: 48, 9 seed
The Hokies got past the midseason issues to start playing well late, even in the losses. With a high-scoring attack, they’re terrific at hitting the threes – they nail over 40% of their tries – and they don’t miss their free throws.
They’re not all that physical on the boards, and the defense isn’t a rock – especially on the inside – but they make up for it by shooting as well anyone in the country when they’re on.
The problems will come against a good D, or a team that hits the glass hard, but they can bomb their way to a few wins.
What’s Going To Happen
This might be Thursday’s most interesting game – duh, it’s an 8/9 game – with the total contrast in styles.
Wisconsin doesn’t want to deal with anyone who can bomb from out of the gym – and that’s Virginia Tech. The Hokies don’t want to face anyone who can play D – and that’s Bucky.
The Badgers will dominate the interior, own the glass, and make the Hokies play down a few gears. Virginia Tech will keep on firing and they’ll keep making the extra pass to stay alive, and Wisconsin will miss too many free throws to put this away, but the Big Ten will get a key win early on.
