College Football Playoff New Year’s Six Bowls

– Top four teams ranked by the College Football Playoff selection committee to be slotted in the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl – January 1st, 2018.

– The two winners to play in the College Football Playoff National Championship in Atlanta on January 8th, 2018.

– The highest-ranked conference champion from the American Athletic, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt automatically gets one spot in either the College Football Playoff or in the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

– Orange Bowl will be ACC vs. Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame

– There are no set assigned conferences for the Cotton, Fiesta, or Chick-fil-A Peach Bowls

American Athletic Bowl Ties

The American Athletic Conference doesn’t have a true pecking order. The bowl matchups are based on best possible games and geography.

The American Athletic has secondary partnerships with the AutoZone Liberty and Camping World Independence.

ACC Bowl Ties

Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as it’s within one game of the team eligible for the slot, except the Orange Bowl.

The ACC gets a team in the Orange Bowl. It’s the ACC champion if it’s not in the College Football Playoff. If the ACC plays the Big Ten in the Orange Bowl, the opportunity will be there for another opening in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

1. Capital One Orange Bowl vs. Big Ten or SEC or Notre Dame.
Note: Since the Big Ten played in the last Orange Bowl, the SEC will likely play in it this season – but it’s not a sure thing. Both the Big Ten and SEC are guaranteed three appearances each over a 12-year span.

2. Camping World Bowl vs. Big 12

New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. Big Ten
Franklin American Mortgage Music City vs. SEC OR TaxSlayer Bowl vs. SEC
It’s one or the other along with the Big Ten. In 2015, the ACC played in the Music City and the Big Ten was in the TaxSlayer. In 2016, the ACC was in the TaxSlayer and the Big Ten in the Music City. The ACC will likely be in the Music City this season.

Big Ten Bowl Ties

The Rose Bowl is a College Football Playoff semifinal – there’s no rule that the Big Ten gets a team in this season. Also, the Big Ten is eligible for the Orange Bowl three times between 2014 and 2016.

Orange will pick the highest-ranked team from Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame to play a team from the ACC. If the Orange takes a Big Ten team, the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl will take an ACC team in place of the Big Ten.

Orange Bowl vs. ACC or Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl vs. SEC
– Agreement for Citrus is for five different teams in six years, so no Minnesota or Michigan.

Outback Bowl vs. SEC
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Iowa, Wisconsin or Northwestern.

National Funding Holiday Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Minnesota, Nebraska or Wisconsin.

TaxSlayer Bowl or Music City Bowl vs. SEC
– ACC and Big Ten combine with each getting three appearances in six years. The Big Ten played in TaxSlayer in 2015 and the Music City in 2016. No Penn State or Iowa in TaxSlayer.

New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. ACC
– It’s not official, but the bowl would prefer to have eight different teams in eight years, so no Northwestern, Penn State or Indiana if possible.

Foster Farms Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Indiana, Maryland or Nebraska.

Quick Lane Bowl vs. ACC

Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl vs. Big 12
– Agreement for three Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas and three Armed Forces bowls in six years. Illinois played in Dallas three years ago but couldn’t fill the spot last year. It was Big 12 vs. Navy in Armed Forces last year – Conference USA will play Army in Armed Forces this season.

Big 12 Bowl Ties

The Sugar Bowl is a College Football Playoff Semifinal – the Big 12 doesn’t have a direct tie-in this season. If the Big 12 doesn’t get a team in the College Football Playoff …

BYU currently has no direct bowl tie in 2017 if it doesn’t get into the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame can take one of the ACC’s bowl spots starting with the Russell Athletic Bowl. Must be within one overall win over the available ACC team with the best overall record to take one of the ACC’s spots.

Army is tied into the Armed Forces Bowl vs. the Big Ten

MAC Bowl Ties

Highest-ranked team from AAC, C-USA, MAC, MW & Sun Belt will play in a New Year’s Six bowl.

The MAC doesn’t have a true pecking order. The bowls matchups are based on best possible games and geography.
