WKU vs. Rice Game Preview
Date: Thursday, September 1st
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: L.T. Smith Stadium, Bowling Green, KY
Network: CBS Sports Network
Why Rice Will Win
Just like every other football offense known to man, Rice is trying to increase the tempo a bit in an attempt to kickstart a mediocre offense. It’s going to have to get creative at times, but against a WKU defensive backfield that might take a little while to come together with two new starting cornerbacks.
Rice, if you were ever going to tee it high and let it fly, this would be the game.
Defensively, while the Owls are in big trouble in most spots, the pass rush shouldn’t be too much of an issue with far more possibilities and potential to get behind the line. If the scary defensive backfield is going to hold up, it’s all about pressure, pressure, pressure.
Why WKU Will Win
The Rice secondary will get burned all season long and should make WKU party like it’s 2015 again.
The Hilltoppers might be breaking in a new quarterback, but former South Florida Bull Mike White has been around the block a few times. With Taywan Taylor and the WKU receiving corps mostly still in place form last year’s offensive juggernaut, it’ll be business as usual – at least for this week. Alabama is coming up next, but for now, WKU’s offense should explode at will.
But even with all the weapons for the air show, WKU can grind it out a bit, too, with Anthony Wales leading a deep group of backs. While the Owls should be able to get behind the line from the outside, the interior of the defense is about to get shredded by one of Conference USA’s better lines.
What’s Going To Happen?
The Hilltoppers are going to look every bit the part of a Conference USA champion again.
Rice needs time to find depth, the right rotation, and the right mix to compete with a team with so much talent on both sides of the ball. There’s no stopping what WKU will want to do, with White doing a solid job in his debut. He’ll just be along for the ride – the rest of the Hilltopper skill guys will do all the heavy lifting.
