Wisconsin is still deep in the College Football Playoff hunt, needing to beat Purdue and Minnesota to get to the Big Ten championship game, and then needing to pull off a win in Indianapolis to make the case to get into the fun.
But appearances are going to matter.
If Ohio State doesn’t get to the Big Ten championship, and it’s 11-1, most of the world will be clamoring for the Buckeyes on the four-best-team theory. They’ll have the argument of having the head-to-head road win over Wisconsin, but the Badgers – if this happens – will have a B1G trophy.
Now, at least in terms of the final score, Bucky is starting to look the part, beating Northwestern and Illinois by a combined score of 69-10, starting with an unyielding run defense and helped by a running game that’s getting better and better.
Corey Clement is the star, Dare Ogunbowale is doing a little of everything, and freshman Bradrick Shaw is getting more and more work, looking like the team’s next great rushing star.
And now it’s up to Purdue to try ruining all the fun.
The Boilermakers have lost their coach, they’ve lost five straight, and they’ve lost the season, but after all the problems and all the negatives, beat Wisconsin in the shocker of the college football season, and the year is made.
The defense hasn’t even been close, especially against the run, and it’s about to be steamrolled over.
This is a beaten and battered team, with key players from RB Markell Jones to defensive starter after defensive starter questionable-to-doubtful. And Wisconsin is the wrong team to be questionable-to-doubtful against.
However, could David Blough pull off something special?
The Purdue offense has been just explosive enough at times to be dangerous, with Blough throwing for 300 yards or more three times in the last five games, hitting Iowa hard for 458 yards and five touchdowns, and throwing four touchdown passes against Minnesota.
Wisconsin’s defense is too good to let that happen, but the secondary hasn’t been pressed too hard lately. At home, in the regular season finale, there’s a chance the Boilermakers could battle hard, but they’re just never going to have the ball.
Wisconsin will keep this ultra-conservative. It’s the No. 1 team in the nation in time of possession, and that’s not going to dip after this week.
