Why Wisconsin Will Win

Now Wisconsin is through the storm.

Yeah, dealing with Iowa on the road isn’t going to be easy, but it’s not like having to deal with LSU, Michigan State – at least when it was Michigan State – Michigan and Ohio State.

The Badgers might have found its groove again against the Buckeyes, running with a sense of purpose and effectiveness rarely seen in any key games under Paul Chryst, and it almost worked in the overtime loss.

Meanwhile, the Bucky defense continues to be a killer. It took everything in the Ohio State bag in the second half – and a terrific performance from J.T. Barrett – to pull it off. The Badgers held the Buckeye ground game in check, and it continued to be effective against the deep ball. However, tackling the OSU athletes in the open field was a problem.

Iowa doesn’t have Ohio State’s talent.

The Hawkeye offense has been wildly inconsistent, doing a wonderful job in the loss to Northwestern and blew up against Purdue, but the passing game can’t seem to find its footing. This isn’t the defense to face when you’re not quite sure how your offense is doing.

This should be a simple formula for the Badgers – be the Badgers.

They hold the ball for 34 minutes a game, while Iowa doesn’t have that same ability to keep things moving averaging under 26 minutes a game of time possession.

Why Iowa Will Win

Isn’t Wisconsin worn out? How can you come that close to pulling off wins over Michigan and Ohio State in pounding, gut-wrenching, emotional losses and still come back spry?

Yeah, Iowa might have been rocky so far, but none of that matters – including the loss to Northwestern – if it goes on a run and wins all the rest of its home games. For all the problems and all the inconsistencies, beat a battered Wisconsin, and – considering Nebraska has to come to Iowa City – Iowa becomes the star of the West again.

So how does it pull it off against the Badgers? Own the defensive line of scrimmage.

Yeah, the UW ground game worked against Ohio State, but that might have been a bit of a blip. It’s been a stunningly rough run on a regular basis to get that ground game moving, while Iowa’s run defense has been getting better and better.

Minnesota’s running game has been terrific, and it was stuffed for just 102 yards two weeks ago. Purdue couldn’t even get started before getting down last week.

So far this year, Iowa is 4-0 when it holds opponents to under 197 rushing yards, and 0-2 when allowing more.

Wisconsin has only rushed for more than 197 yards twice, against Akron and Ohio State.

What’s Going To Happen?

Can Wisconsin avoid the turnovers that proved to be a killer in last year’s loss to the Hawkeyes?

The Badger defense should be terrific again considering how mediocre the Iowa offense has been, but will the Hawkeye D rise up and come up with something special?

Wisconsin will struggle and sputter in the first half, but the defensive pressure will ramp up in the second half forcing an awful finish for Hawkeye QB C.J. Beathard, who’ll have a hard time getting comfortable behind a banged up line that won’t be able to handle the relentless Bucky pass rush.
