Bowl and Conference Implications

The winner takes the West division to face with Ohio or Miami University in the MAC championship. Western Michigan can keep its hopes of a New Year’s Six game – the Cotton Bowl – alive with two more wins.

What’s Going To Happen?

Sort of lost in the national love, the GameDay appearance, the Row The Boat thing, and the 11-0 record is that Western Michigan still has a lot of work to do.

There’s no question that it’s the best team in the conference this year, but everything can come horribly undone if the Broncos can’t beat Toledo.

Also lost in the shuffle is just how good the Rockets might be.

Okay, so they haven’t beaten anyone with a pulse – sorry, Arkansas State, at least early in the year, and Eastern Michigan – but they overcame the loss to Ohio to beat Akron, Northern Illinois and Ball State to put themselves in a position to be one win away from a MAC title shot.

The Rockets have the offense to keep up, currently ranking second in the nation in passing efficiency and fifth in total offense. The yards aren’t always leading to points, but this is one of the few teams that can keep up the pace with the Broncos.

Western Michigan has been able to coast a bit, and now it’s finally about to get pushed.

The Broncos have beaten two teams – Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan – who are bowl eligible, but Northwestern should be able to get there with a win over Illinois.

Yeah, the offense is amazing. Yeah, the team is air tight, leading the nation in turnover margin and first in third down conversions, but it’s also played against a whole lot of whatever.

This is the attitude moment. Toledo is going to come in and let it rip, shocking the Broncos with the offense hanging punch for punch, especially on the ground with Kareem Hunt and Terry Swanson frustrating the WMU defensive front.

There might not be much of a Rocket pass rush, but it’ll be just enough to bother Zach Terrell and throw off the WMU passing attack.

But when everything else starts to fail, WMU will start to pound away with the ground game.

It’s going to be a grind, but in the second half, the Broncos will pound away with Jarvion Franklin to slow things down after Hunt goes off early. It’ll be just enough to keep the game alive so Terrell can come through with the one late drive to win the MAC championship – and this is the MAC championship.
