Yo! Everyone! The Big 12 isn’t out of the College Football Playoff hunt yet. West Virginia has managed to beat a good Missouri team, got by BYU, and found its way by Kansas State to show that it might just have the right makeup to be in the mix for the Big 12 title, and maybe more.
Skyler Howard and the offense might not be a Texas Tech-like thrill ride when it comes to the passing game, but it’s been efficient and it’s put up plenty of yards, while the defense has been just clutch enough to hold up in tight moments.
But now the Mountaineers have to go on the road after playing three home games and a neutral site game in Maryland against BYU.
And for the first time all year, the secondary is going to be pushed hard.
Missouri didn’t quite have the passing game ramped up yet in the opener, but Texas Tech has the offense going at full force.
Oddly enough, the two losses this year came on the two big Patrick Mahomes passing days – throwing for 540 yards against Arizona State, and 504 yards last week against Kansas State – on the way to a special season hitting 73% of his throws with 20 touchdowns and four picks.
But as good as he’s been, and as good as the Red Raiders have been, the one good win is over Louisiana Tech. Even in the losses, though, Mahomes and company have been special when it comes to keeping it all moving, ranking second in the nation in third down conversion percentage. That’s a problem – the West Virginia D might be clutch, but it gives up too many third down plays.
West Virginia has the adaptability on offense to keep up in a shootout, with Howard good enough to revert back to his 2016 Cactus Bowl performance, throwing for 532 yards and five scores in the win over Arizona State.
It’ll be a back-and-forth shootout like all Texas Tech games are, but West Virginia will be able to slow things down just enough in the fourth quarter to pull away.
The Mountaineer defense will hold serve twice, and that’ll be enough.
