Washington State (7-2) vs. California (4-5) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 10:30 pm
Venue: Martin Stadium, Pullman, WA
Yeah, Washington State is still unbeaten in conference play and yeah, it really is the in the College Football Playoff chase if it wins out and takes the Pac-12 championship.
Yeah, Cal needs to win two of its last three games to go bowling, and it has to start looking better after getting blown out by USC and Washington.
But forget about all the implications, and forget about how much this really does matter in the Pac-12 North world. The only this that matters is that this is going to be a world of fun.
Cal’s defense is dead last in the nation in points allowed, getting lit up for 43 points or more seven of the nine games. Meanwhile, Davis Webb is helping the nation’s fifth-ranked passing game average 354 yards per game.
Washington State’s defense has been stunningly fine, while the offense is second in the nation throwing the ball, averaging 384 yards per game for an attack that puts up 43 points per outing.
It all blends together for a game that running should be options, passing numbers should be flying fast and furious, and the two teams should spend the full sixty minutes trading haymakers.
What happened when these two met last year, when Jared Goff was at the helm for the Rams? It was just a normal, regular 34-28 Cal win, with the Cougars throwing for 389 yards and Goff throwing for 390.
That was cute, but these two teams should combine for 900 passing yards. At least that’s the hope.
The difference will be the Washington State defense that’s been good up front, great against the run, and excellent at taking the ball away, coming up with 19 takeaways on the year and three or more in three of the last five games.
Cal has turned the ball over five times in the last two games, and while the team has been good overall in turnover margin, it’s not going to be able to win it by enough to overcome a monster day from Luke Falk, who’s thrown for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns in the last three games.
Cal just got destroyed by Washington’s Jake Browning – giving up 417 yards and seven scores – and Mike Leach’s attack will make things just as bad.
Have fun with this.
