While this would normally seem like a trap game for a Washington team that’s spent the last two weeks being overloved for going 6-0 against a schedule that has just one sure-thing bowl team – Stanford – Oregon State might not have the pop to get it done.
This was an awful matchup to begin with for the Beaver spread offense, but there are three big issues that should make this ugly – at least in theory.
1) The Washington defense is just that good, with the defensive front to shut the OSU O down cold, 2) Oregon State QB Darell Garretson is done with an ankle injury, and 3) Arizona will take this seriously after almost biffing a seemingly easy game to Arizona a few weeks ago, even though it didn’t have its starting quarterback.
The Beaver ground game found its groove in the win over Cal two weeks ago, running for 474 yards and six touchdowns with Garretson going off, and it was solid against the good Utah run D last week. But now it’ll be sophomore Marcus McMaryion running the offense, and getting the call against a defense like Washington’s with two weeks off to prepare is going to be a big problem.
The saving grace for OSU is a brilliant pass defense that’s held up well this year, holding down Davis Webb and Cal and allowing just four touchdown passes so far – with three coming from Colorado – to go along with five interceptions. However, four of those picks came against Idaho State.
UW and the nation’s most efficient passing game won’t take any big chances, because it probably won’t have to.
On the flip side, Oregon State has the nation’s least efficient passing game – and it’s not going to start rolling now with McMaryion under center.
The Husky defense will camp out behind the line, and it’ll dominate from the start. The OSU offense won’t go anywhere.
