Why Washington Will Win
Beating Stanford might have been the big national moment for Washington, but this is the game the Husky program really, really, really wants.
The Apple Cup vs. Washington State is the rivalry game for UW, but Oregon is the program it’s been gunning for during this down period. If you think there’s going to be any sort of a letdown after the Stanford win, forget about it.
There might have been some tough moments in the overtime win over Arizona, but Washington has been devastating in the four other games with everything kicking in at once.
The defense loaded with NFL talent has been ridiculous, taking the ball away two or more times in every game on the way to a nation-leading +11 turnover margin. The front seven is camping out in the backfield, and as Stanford found out, this D comes in waves.
Throw in the play of QB Jake Browning and the ultra-efficient offense, and it’s all working.
Compare that to the hot mess that’s Oregon right now – the defense is lousy, and the offense is undergoing a big shift – everything is set up perfectly for Washington keep all the fun going.
Why Oregon Will Win
Will playing on the road matter? Washington has been a killer at home, but that one road game so far against Arizona was the scary overtime moment that almost ruined the fun before it could get started.
The offense hasn’t really been a problem, and Dakota Prukop has been okay, but there could be a shot in the arm with freshman Justin Herbert potentially getting the call. He was in the mix for the starting job this offseason, and if he’s playing, he’s a curveball being thrown at the Dawg D.
At least that’s the hope.
But the offense hasn’t really been the issue. At home, can the Duck O line get Royce Freeman rolling? Washington’s defense was terrific last year, too, and Freeman came up with 138 yards in the win, and tore it up as a freshman with 169 yards and four touchdowns.
Arizona was able to get its backs in space – mostly quarterback Brandon Dawkins – and the offense rolled for over 300 yards against the UW D. At home, in a desperate situation, Herbert and Freeman will be front and center.
What’s Going To Happen?
Oregon is still good. It’s still cranking out the offensive production, and it’s still dangerous – especially at home – but the defense isn’t slowing anyone down.
The offense will have its moments, but Washington will be too solid offensively as the game goes on while the defense will find its footing in the second half to get a strong, decisive win to keep the momentum rolling.
