Why Washington Will Win

You’d probably throw for an average of 313 yards and three touchdowns and no picks against Rutgers, Idaho and Portland State, but what Washington has done so far in the first three games is still impressive.

QB Jake Browning has been red-hot, hitting 72% of his throws for 744 yards and 12 scores with one pick so far, and now he’s going against a secondary that’s allowing over 288 yards per game and can’t seem to come up with any sort of key third down stop.

The Arizona ground game is starting to work, but now that it’s facing a real defense, it might not find much room to move against a Husky defense allowing two yards per pop.

It’s a bad, bad, bad matchup all the way around for Arizona, especially considering UW won’t make any mistakes. So far this year, the Dawgs are +7 in turnover margin forcing turnovers at an alarming rate. However …

Why Arizona Will Win

The Wildcats have done a decent job in turnover margin, too. Granted, almost all the takeaways came against Grambling, the defense did a nice job against Hawaii while the offense hasn’t given the ball away in the last two games.

The Washington running game is the one thing that hasn’t been so hot so far. It’s been okay, but it’s been too easy to rely on Browning and the passing game – the ground rolled against Portland State, but that’s Portland State.

The Wildcats have to find ways to dial up the pressure, force the Huskies to kick it away once in a while – the punting game hasn’t been all that good, either – and try winning the field position battle.

Washington has yet to face a real running attack, and considering the Cats have cranked up close to 600 yards on the ground over the last two weeks. It’s taken a while to heat up, but the Arizona O might be hitting its stride at the right time.

What’s Going To Happen?

Will Arizona’s offense really work like it did against Hawaii? Can Washington’s defense get the job done against a real team?

The key is Browning.

He’ll be lights-out against an Arizona defense that’ll get frustrated time and again after not coming up with enough key stops. The Huskies are the real deal, and they’re about to show it.
