Wake Forest (4-0) vs. NC State (2-1) Game Preview

Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, NC
Network: ACC Network

Don’t ask how the sausage is made – Wake Forest is 4-0.

It’s not always pretty, there isn’t much in the way of a passing game, if any, and the competition hasn’t been scintillating – there might not have been a win so far over a team that’ll go bowling.

But if you’re Wake Forest, you don’t care. You’re 4-0. You’re playing with house money.

NC State hasn’t beaten anyone of note, either, and now this becomes a really big deal in terms of perception. Head coach Dave Doeren won’t get the Les Miles treatment if he loses, but the next three games are …

Notre Dame, at Clemson, at Louisville.

Dave Doeren can’t lose this game.

And he won’t. Wake Forest won’t come up with the five interceptions it got last week against Indiana, but it will get hit for major yards for another week. Ryan Finley is coming off a 24-of-28 performance against Old Dominion, going his third straight game without giving up a pick.

This is a plucky Demon Deacon team, but the Pack has the punting game to keep it pinned deep, and it has the offense to get up just enough early to make Wake Forest press.

The Demon Deacons just don’t have the firepower or the pop, as long as NC State is motivated and not looking ahead. It won’t, with a good game from the O line keeping the dangerous Wake Forest defensive front – and yeah, it really is pretty good – from making enough plays in the backfield to throw off the Pack.
