Virginia Tech (5-2) vs. Pittsburgh (5-2) Game Preview
Date: Thursday, Oct. 27
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA
Miami bowed out, Duke was never in it, and Georgia Tech and Virginia aren’t factors. It’s a three-team race for the Coastal title and a chance to play – almost certainly – Clemson for the ACC championship with a desperate hope of possibly getting into the CFP if everything breaks right.
Pitt already lost to North Carolina, who lost to Virginia Tech. A Panther loss all but ends the division dream – too much traffic in front – while a Hokie loss opens things up for North Carolina.
Pitt’s been on a roll over the last three weeks, getting through the relatively easy run of Marshall, Georgia Tech and Virginia, and now it’s prove it time for a defense that’s been hit-or-miss – fantastic against the run, miserable against the pass – and an offense that’s rolling for over 40 points a game over the last three.
Virginia Tech got past the clunker against Syracuse to rip through Miami and get back on track. The defense has been incredible, but it’s also been indicative of the team’s success with the team going 5-0 when allowing 17 points or fewer, and 0-2 when allowing more.
Can the Pitt offense that hasn’t been stopped all season long finally get stuffed? Not really, but the Panther defense will be the bigger problem against Hokie QB Jerod Evans.
It’s a banged up Pitt D, with star pass rusher Ejuan Price fighting though a leg problem and the linebacking corps a major concern. Evans has just one 300-yard game on the year – the loss to Syracuse – but make it two, with his eighth multi-touchdown pass game of the year coming in an efficient and effective showdown.
Evans, combined with the Hokie run D that’s held everyone but Tennessee and Syracuse to 100 yards – both of the team’s losses, by the way – will pull out a tight battle.
